Frederick Douglas Academy Charter Middle & High Schools Ready to Open in the Fall of 2006

ICEF set to launch new family of schools

Los Angeles, CA − July 13, 2006 −
With charters recently granted by LAUSD, the Inner City Education Foundation is ready to launch two new schools employing the same educational model presently bringing success to underserved students in the Crenshaw district of South Los Angeles.

Mrs. Karen Anderson and Mr. Greg Hill will serve as the first Directors of the Frederick Douglass Academy Charter Middle School and High School, respectively. Both bring several years of educational and entrepreneurial experience alongside a longstanding commitment to South Los Angeles to their new positions.

The new FDA high school will operate under a similar philosophy applying the same rigorous college-prep curriculum, high expectations, and mandated parent involvement that have made View Park Prep’s 96% African American student population the highest performing in South Los Angeles at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Frederick Douglass Academy High School academics will be bolstered by outstanding extracurricular offerings. Acclaimed music teacher, Fernando Pullum will develop a performing arts curriculum based on years of successful instruction at Washington Prep High School. Athletically,
FDA HS will offer boys and girls basketball and rugby in the first year, add girl’s volleyball and coed track and field in the second, and 8-man football in the third.

FDA Charter Schools carry the mission of preparing every student to attend and to compete at the top 100 colleges and universities in the nation.

“We are taking the next steps in expanding our successful model to scale”, beams ICEF CEO and founder Michael D. Piscal. “The Frederick Douglas Academy Charter Schools are the next phase of development for ICEF which plans to spread the VPP model throughout South Los Angeles until we’ve created 20 more small high performing middle schools and high schools serving over 9,000 students by 2015.”
